# YAML front matter and PDF metadata

Front matter is not printed: the title and author become the PDF's document properties, and the language sets the hyphenation rules.

YAML front matter is skipped in the output; title: and author: become the PDF's document properties, and language: sets the hyphenation rules.

# Quarterly report

The YAML block above never renders. Open the PDF's document properties, usually File and then Properties in the viewer, and you will find the title and the author there, where a document management system or a search index reads them.

| Key | Effect |
|:----|:-------|
| `title` | The PDF title, shown in the viewer's tab or window bar |
| `author` | The PDF author |
| `language` | The document language, which selects the hyphenation dictionary and is written into the PDF for screen readers |

The first heading of the document is still the visible title on the page. Keep the two the same unless you want a short window title for a long heading.
