# Hyphenation
The document language sets the hyphenation rules. This document declares `language: de-DE` in its front matter; the editor's language picker overrides it for the preview, so switch the picker to German to see the German paragraph break at German syllables.

Die Donaudampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft beförderte im vergangenen Jahr mehr Fahrgäste als je zuvor. Die Geschwindigkeitsbegrenzung auf der Bundesautobahn bleibt ein Dauerthema der Verkehrspolitik, und die Krankenversicherungsbeiträge steigen weiter. 77 dictionaries are bundled for 69 languages, among them Afrikaans, Catalan, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Estonian, Finnish, Georgian, Greek, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Latin, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, Turkish and Ukrainian. A language without a dictionary renders without automatic hyphenation.

> Author-written hyphens and soft hyphens (`­`) are always kept. Hyphenation only adds breaks; it never removes one you wrote.
